Prepare for any job interview with AI, from your phone

Five steps that take about an hour: predict the questions, polish your answers, rehearse out loud with a voice assistant, get honest feedback, and practise in English.

Most people prepare for an interview by reading tips and hoping for the best. With a free AI assistant on your phone you can do something much closer to a real rehearsal. You don't need a course or a laptop. Here are the five steps I use.

1. Know the questions before you walk in#

Take a screenshot or photo of the job ad and send it to ChatGPT or Gemini with one line:

This is the job I'm applying for. What are the 10 questions I'm most likely to be asked?

You get questions that fit this exact role, not a generic list. Ask for the reason behind each one too, so you know what the interviewer is really checking.

2. Answer "Tell me about yourself" well#

It is the first question in almost every interview, and the one people ramble on most. Write your experience in two rough lines, then ask:

Turn this into a confident 45-second answer to "Tell me about yourself" for this job. Keep it in my own simple words.

Read the result out loud and change anything that doesn't sound like you. The goal is a clear answer you can say naturally, not a speech you memorise.

3. Rehearse out loud with a voice assistant#

Open Gemini Live, or ChatGPT's voice mode, and say: "Act as the hiring manager for this job and interview me. Ask one question at a time." Then answer by speaking, as you would in the room. Saying answers out loud is where most of the improvement happens.

4. Ask for honest feedback#

At the end of the practice interview, ask: "Rate my answers honestly and tell me how to improve each one." You'll hear which answers were vague, too long or missing an example, while there is still time to fix them.

5. Interview in English? Practise in English#

If the interview is in English, run the same rehearsal in English and ask the assistant to correct your mistakes after each answer. It is a patient partner that never gets tired of repeating a question.

A few cautions#

  • Don't paste private details you wouldn't share, such as ID numbers or salary slips.
  • Check any fact the AI tells you about the company on the company's own website.
  • Use the AI to practise, not to read answers from during the real interview.
